09) I Vow To Thee My Country – Ben Crawley
The melody comprising 'I Vow To Thee’ has been adapted for voices by Robert Prizeman from Gustav Holst's "Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity" which is one of seven sections from the Orchestral Suite ‘The Planets.’ Robert Prizeman has captured a feeling of boundless space with a contrast of voluminous sound and a remote dusting of an ambient instrumental texture, teamed with twinklings of a brighter being. Nothing could be truer of the musical variety of soloist Ben Crawley who can sing freely from outside the spectrum, hovering above our natural auditory focal point, then coming back with intensity and passion. Libera mirrors this magical proficiency when they sing together, expressing an incredible smoothness of line and sensitivity and understanding of what they sing about. The addition of more and more voices is appropriately emulated in the accompaniment which quickens its movement to increase the dramatic nature of the second half, culminating with Ben's heartfelt allegiance in his final vow.
